Lions, Books, & Flags....oh, my!
In May, the Beavercreek Lions Club made two separate trips to Beavercreek Elementary School. The first trip, "Flags for 1st Graders" is an annual event.
The second, inspired last year by our members who volunteer with S.M.A.R.T., was to give a book to every 1st grader, so that they would have a book of their own to take home. We received numerous letters of thanks from the students....here are a few fabulous examples from Mrs. Sherrick's class.
Our treasurer, whose granddaughter is a Beavercreek 1st Grader, got the chance to read to her class. Ed Turpin, a former teacher, enthusiastically greeted one of the 1st grade teachers...noting that she was one of his former students, to the delight & amazement of the children. Ed also spent time reading aloud with one of the classes. The kids were encouraged to get their Library cards this summer & participate in the Carnegie Center's reading programs.

StoryWalk®
What is a StoryWalk®?
Combining physical activity with literacy may seem like an odd mix, but it’s an innovative way to get people of all ages out walking while reading children’s picture books. Pages of a book are transformed into posters that are then posted, in order, in the windows of local businesses....inviting families, children, caregivers, teachers and others to follow the path of pages.
Our StoryWalk® will be featuring the picture book, The Teddy Bear by David McPhail. This StoryWalk contains 30 pages, made into posters that will be placed in the windows of downtown businesses. The story will begin after the Annual Teddy Bear Parade, starting at Clackamas Auto Parts and ending at Coffee Rush. Maps will be available at Oregon City Awards and participating businesses.
StoryWalks® have been installed in 45 states and four countries, Germany, Cananda, England and Bermuda. They are always received with appreciation.
StoryWalk® was created by Anne Ferguson of Montpelier, VT. and developed in collaboration with the Vermont Bicycle & Pedestrian Coalition and the Kellogg Hubbard Library. The project is a way to encourage people of all ages to get out and walk while enjoying a great children’s story.

Blind Golf Association Tournament
Jill Smart & Frank Wille had the privilege of participating, as scorekeepers, in the Blind Golfers Association Tournament this past week, August 20th & 21st, 2013. All the golfers are legally blind, some are totally blind, all are AMAZING! Each golfer has their own coach, who assists the golfers with direction, distance to the pin, how hard to hit the ball. The day was gorgeous, the players, marvelous!
