North American Blind Golf Association Tournament
Beavercreek Lions Frank Wille and Jill Smart volunteered to act as scorekeepers at the North American Blind Golf Association Tournament, held this past August at Stone Creek Golf Course in Oregon City. Golfers come from all over the world to participate, including as far away as South Africa. All golfers are legally blind and many are totally blind. Each golfer has a coach, who describes the location of the pin, any obstacles, the distance and makes suggestions as to what the golfer may want to do on his/her approach.
Most golfers will take a "practice" swing or two before actually addressing the ball, to get their footing.
These golfers would be considered very good golfers if they were sighted. Frank & Jill agreed that ALL of the golfers were better golfers than they are (or ever will be!). "The golfers are absolutely amazing...to realize that they are basically "golfing in the dark"...it gives you chills. I feel very priveleged to act as a scorekeeper & encourage other Lions to participate in the future, if they have the opportunity," enthused Jill Smart, Past President.

Beavercreek Lion President visits Pays de Dentelles Lions in France

President Jill Smart of the Beavercreek Lions Club visited the Pays de Dentelles de Montmirail Lions Club at their dinner meeting while in the Provence region of France. The Pays de Dentelles Lions meet at a small Lion-owned restaurant, Les Abeilles in Sablet. One of the members is a winemaker and offered to give Jill and her winemaker boyfriend a tour of his winery and a tasting. The highlight was the Lions-bottled Gigondas wine made by their Club, by their member & winemaker: Christian Bonnfils, to raise money, in addition to their annual tulip-bulb sale. Their club is truly a Lions Club International with members originally from Belgium, The Netherlands, and France. Jill presented them with several BC Lions pins and received a flag in return.
